Fuel Cells, Paving the Way to a Hydrogen Revolution
The fuel cell is a generator that converts the energy of a combustible into electricity, directly and continuously by electrochemical reactions.
The simplest system makes it possible to produce water and electricity from inputs of hydrogen and oxygen.
How does it work? A fuel cell consists of two electrodes: an anode and a cathode. These electrodes are separated by an electrolyte, a material that blocks the passage of electrons.
The anode is charged with hydrogen from a tank, the cathode with oxygen coming from the air.
In the anode, the hydrogen molecules split up. Whilst the ions diffuse into the electrolyte, the electrons are forced to circulate in an external circuit: a continuous electric current is created.
In the cathode, electrons, ions and oxygen combine to form water. The reaction also produces that can be recovered. The fuel cell continues to function as long as it is fed with reagents.
