In 2005, the European Union introduced the first carbon market, which remains the largest emissions scheme in the world, covering almost 50% of Europe’s CO2 emissions. Although it may at first seem complex, the way it works is explained here using just a few images, in a video put together by IFP Énergies Nouvelles, the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME) and CDC-Climat-Recherche.
