Permafrost

Ground (soil or rock) that remains at or below 0 °C for at least two consecutive years. It can contain ice, frozen organic matter, and methane. The thawing of permafrost may release greenhouse gases (such as methane and carbon dioxide) into the atmosphere, thereby contributing to the amplification of climate change.
