What is green electricity?

is produced using fossil, nuclear or renewable energies. When it is produced using the latter (solar, wind, , hydraulic, etc.) it is called ‘green ’ – a good promotional argument for electricity providers. But can a “fossil” be distinguished from a “green” electron?
