In his living room in Tal Alkarama in northwest Syria, Abou Walid has installed a makeshift stove, which he fills with pistachio shells to heat his home. In the midst of civil war, supply of fuel oil and wood has ground to a halt. So Syrians have had to get creative, making their own rudimentary stoves and firing them with pistachio shells imported from neighboring Turkey. One ton of shells can heat a home for all of winter.
