How is Hydrogen Produced?

Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the natural world, but it is almost always combined with other elements, so it has to be isolated. The problem is that 95% of hydrogen is currently produced using processes that emit CO2 and therefore contribute to global warming, including steam methane reforming and charcoal gasification. Water electrolysis separates hydrogen and oxygen atoms without generating any CO2 emissions, but the process is expensive. Researchers are working on other sustainable methods using microorganisms and photoelectrochemical cells.
