Children's Play Produces Energy in Ghana

The swings and merry-go-rounds at this school in Ghana generate electricity that is stored in batteries. Before going home, the kids charge their lanterns so they will be able to do their homework later that evening. This novel system has already been implemented at 42 schools across the country, thanks to the nonprofit organization Empower Playgrounds. Independent power generation, assisted by solar equipment, helps compensate for the limitations of the Ghanaian power grid.
