Arnaud Chaperon graduated in marine engineering from ENSTA, a leading French engineering school. He joined Total in 1980 as a geophysicist in the Exploration Division, before being appointed to head Total’s gas business in Japan in 1987. In 1990, he was named Total's Representative in Taiwan, where he spent three years. He then returned to headquarters in Paris to lead international gas and liquefied petroleum gas (lpg)Combination of light hydrocarbons produced partly from the refining of crude oil (about 40%) and partly from the processing of natural gas.. trading activities in the Gas & PowerIn physics, power is the amount of energy supplied by a system per unit time. In simpler terms, power can be viewed as energy output... business. He was appointed CEO of Total E&P Qatar in 2002. After five years in the emirate, he returned to headquarters in 2007 as Senior Vice President of the reorganized Gas & Power business, with responsibility for expanding Total’s positions in new energies, especially solar and biomassIn the energy sector, biomass is defined as all organic matter of plant or animal origin... /biotech. In 2011, he managed the acquisition of SunPower, now the second-ranking PV solar company in the world, in which Total holds a majority interest. In biomass and biotech, he negotiated and developed a partnership with Amyris, a global biotech leader, opening up new and promising opportunities in biofuelA fuel produced from plant or animal matter. There are currently two types of biofuel... and advanced biomolecules for Total. He is currently Senior Vice President, Prospective Analysis, Institutional Relations & Communication in the New Energies Division, reporting to Philippe Boisseau, the Division’s President.
Mr. Chaperon’s extensive experience and expertise in renewable energies spans solar energy, biomass, biotech, integrating renewable energies into power grids, power storage and ocean energy.
Mr. Chaperon is a member of Total New Energies’ Management Committee and sits on the Boards of Directors of SunPower, French start-up Voltalis and the Syndicat des Energies Renouvelables, the association of French renewable energyEnergy sources that are naturally replenished so quickly that they can be considered inexhaustible on a human time scale... companies.
Mr. Chaperon is a Knight of the French National Order of Merit.
