Syria: Extracting Oil Amid the Ashes

Rumaylan in Syria's arid northeastern province of Hasakah is the country's largest oil field in terms of surface area. When Syrian forces withdrew after an onslaught by Daesh militants – still stationed nearby – the Kurdish autonomous government took over production. Now some twenty small, makeshift refineries are producing affordable, albeit poor quality, gasoline. Here local officials explain the main difficulties they face.
