- Uranium-235 (U235) is one of the two natural isotopes (elements whose nuclei have the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons) of uranium. Natural uranium contains 99.3% U238 and 0.7 % U235. U235, however, is the only isotope that is fissile (capable of undergoing nuclear fission). Uranium has to be enriched with U235 before it can be used in nuclear power plants.
