- OAPEC (see the French definition )
- Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries.
- OECD (see the French definition )
- Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. The OECD is an international organization with 30 member countries that aims to help governments respond to the economic and social challenges of a globalized economy.
- Offshore petroleum (see the French definition )
- Offshore petroleum is mined from the seabed. Extracting offshore petroleum is more complex than traditional reservoir extraction because drilling can reach an underwater depth of over 2000 meters. The buried petroleum is recovered using specialized equipment to bring it to the surface and store it.
- Oil crisis (see the French definition )
- An oil crisis is an oil shortage – either actual or predicted – which has a major impact on the global economy. When production falls, prices rise (the rarer the raw material, the more expensive it is). To date, the world has experienced three major oil crises: in 1973 (embargo during the Yom Kippur war), in 1979 (the Iran-Iraq war) and in 2008 (increase in demand, stagnation of supply, and speculation).
- Oil logistics (see the French definition )
- Oil logistics refers to all the means implemented to distribute petroleum products from refining through to the end user. Whether a matter of storage in oil depots or of distribution networks, the main challenge is safety. The Seveso II Directive (set up in 1976 and amended in 2003) sets stringent safety regulations (e.g. alarms, fire safety systems, regular equipment inspections, etc.). There are also specific facilities designed to protect the environment (e.g. waste collection containers managed by specialist companies).
- Oil pipeline (see the French definition )
- Pipes that are used for transporting oil and refined petroleum products over long distances (land or sea).
- Oil slick (see the French definition )
- An oil slick is a large layer of oil that pollutes the sea and shoreline. It can be caused by an oil tanker sinking, problems on an oil rig, or even by malicious intent (e.g. unauthorized venting). A number of safety measures have been put in place to prevent such occurrences.
- Oil storage depot (see the French definition )
- Oil storage depots are intermediate distribution points for oil products. Tankers are filled up here to supply and deliver gasoline, diesel and heating oil to service stations as well as to residential and commercial premises.
- OPEC (see the French definition )
- OPEC stands for the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. Created in 1960, it has 12 member countries (Algeria, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Venezuela and Angola). Their role is to agree on the quantities of oil sold on the world market. They then divide this production amongst themselves to ensure a certain degree of price stabilization.
- Organic polymers (see the French definition )
- Organic polymers are plastics made from renewable resources such as plants, algae or animal matter. Because they are biodegradable, they could eventually replace oil-based packaging, such as plastic carrier bags, for example. Organic polymers are also called biopolymers.
- Oxidation (see the French definition )
- Oxidation is a chemical reaction during which an atom loses electrons, e.g. the oxidation of iron produces rust (oxidation of Fe into Fe3+ ion).
