Glossaire :Majors [...] Monomer
- Majors (see the French definition )
- A term used to describe the main oil companies.
- Mechanical energy (see the French definition )
- Mechanical energy is the sum total of potential energy and kinetic energy. Potential energy is the energy stored in a body due to its position and kinetic energy is the energy produced by a body due to its motion. Mechanical energy therefore translates into the movement of matter. For example, it is mechanical energy that enables the blades of a wind turbine to turn.
- Mercaptan (thiol) (see the French definition )
- Mercaptans are found in crude oil. They are alcohols in which one atom of sulfur replaces the oxygen atom. They are corrosive and give off a foul-smelling odor. Given their “aggressive” composition, they have to be extracted from crude oil and gas. To do this, the raw materials are washed with sodium. This process is called sweetening.
- Methane (CH4) (see the French definition )
- The main component of natural gas deposits and oil deposit gas caps. Methane is produced naturally by landfills, rice cropping and cattle flatulence.
- Methanization (anaerobic fermentation) (see the French definition )
- Methanization is a way of converting fermentable waste into energy. This is how waste is converted into methane gas, the major component of natural gas.
- Migration (see the French definition )
- Migration is the stage in oil formation when the hydrocarbons are gradually expelled towards the rocks surrounding the source rock and start a slow climb to the surface. Migration speed depends on the ability of the rocks that they cross to allow liquids to flow (porosity/permeability).
- Mixed oxide (Mox) (see the French definition )
- Plutonium can be obtained by reprocessing radioactive waste from nuclear power plants. When this plutonium is mixed with uranium, this produces a new nuclear fuel called Mox (mixed oxide, i.e. a mix of uranium and plutonium oxides).
- Molecule (see the French definition )
- The molecule is the smallest chemical unit of a compound. A molecule is formed by a group of atoms that are always arranged in the same way, with a fixed composition and well-defined size and shape.
- Monomer (see the French definition )
- A base molecule that can bind together with other monomers by a polymerization reaction during polymer synthesis.
