The Kyoto Protocol is an international treaty. It was set up as part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It was signed on December 11, 1997 and came into force on February 16, 2005. With this agreement, 38 industrialized countries – with the notable exception of the United States –committed themselves to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions by 5% between 2008 and 2012 in relation to the emissions recorded in 1990.
