Glossaire :Electron [...] Exploration portfolio
- Electron (see the French definition )
- Matter is made up of atoms organized in a nucleus, around which are the electrons (negatively charged particles). In an atom at rest, there are as many electrons as there are protons in the nucleus.
- Energy and Climate Change package (see the French definition )
- The Energy and Climate Change package is a shared energy policy that was adopted by the 27 EU countries in December 2008 in the fight against climate change. The Package sets a “3 x 20” target for the EU by 2020. This entails both reducing greenhouse gases and energy consumption by 20% and increasing the proportion of renewable energies in the European energy mix by 20% (distribution of different energy sources in European consumption).
- Energy efficiency (see the French definition )
- Energy efficiency is the ability of a building, infrastructure or production facility to provide goods and services using the least amount of energy possible.
- Energy independence (and energy dependence) (see the French definition )
- Energy independence is the ability of a country or region to meet all its own energy needs. A country which has achieved energy independence can produce, transform and transport the energy that it consumes by itself. An energy dependent country, meanwhile, is a country that has to import energy to meet its energy needs.
- Energy performance (see the French definition )
- The energy performance of an operation or a type of technology is measured by the ratio of the energy provided to the energy used. In energy techniques, energy performance can be used to ensure that more energy is recovered than was used.
- Energy policy (see the French definition )
- A country or region’s energy policy is all its choices and policy decisions relating to energy. An energy policy takes effect as specific measures and action plans (e.g. establishing an energy supply strategy taking account of economic and geopolitical factors; providing information to the public; implementing thermal regulations).
- Energy-intensive (see the French definition )
- Describes a building, mode of transport or industrial process which uses a large amount of energy.
- Environmental impact (see the French definition )
- The concept of environmental impact describes the consequences on the environment of an activity that humans perform to meet their needs (e.g. energy production, transport, etc.). Environmental impact can take different forms, including consumption of raw materials, pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and increase in wood production linked to global warming.
- EPR™ (see the French definition )
- EPR™ (European Pressurized Reactor) is a third generation pressurized water nuclear reactor that was designed and developed by the AREVA group. The reactor is designed for countries with a high capacity power grid and can reach 1650 Megawatts – 10 to 40% more than current pressurized water reactors! Finland, France and China have already started building EPRs. It is currently undergoing certification in the United States and the UK.
- ETBE (see the French definition )
- Ethyl Tertiary Butyl Ether. This is a compound obtained from the reaction of one molecule of ethanol and one molecule of isobutene, and is one of the bases of biofuels.
- Exploration (see the French definition )
- All methods used to discover new hydrocarbon deposits.
- Exploration portfolio (see the French definition )
- An oil company’s exploration portfolio shows all prospects (possible traps) that may contain hydrocarbons. The only way of ensuring whether the exploration portfolio has any value is to drill in those possible areas.
