Glossaire :Deposit [...] Drilling

Deposit (see the French definition )
A deposit (or field) is an underground accumulation of raw materials (e.g. oil, gas, coal, uranium). Oil, for example, is trapped in porous rocks, a little like water trapped in a sponge. The rocks are themselves protected by rock layers that are completely impermeable. Drilling is used to dig very deep underground to access the deposit.
Derrick (or mast) (see the French definition )
A derrick is a support used in the drilling system. It is a 30m high metal tower used to assemble the drill rods and insert them vertically.
Desulfurization (see the French definition )
Desulfurization is a process which involves removing most of the sulfur from petroleum products, and this can be achieved via a hydrogen supply: the sulfur atoms leave the hydrocarbons to join up with the hydrogen and form hydrogen sulfide (H2S).
Development (of a deposit) (see the French definition )
Development of an oil or gas deposit starts with forecasts as to how the deposit could be developed, surveys and construction of the production facilities.
Directional drilling (see the French definition )
At sea, it would be too expensive to set up as many production platforms as there are vertical drilling wells that can be used to develop a deposit. This is why the practice of directional drilling is used. This makes it possible to start about 20 directional production wells at different places in the deposit from just one oil rig platform at sea. The process can also be used on land (clusters).
Diversion channel (see the French definition )
In a hydroelectric dam, the diversion channel takes the water to the hydroelectric power station.
DNA (see the French definition )
DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid acronym) is the main constituent of chromosomes. This is a very long molecule that carries genetic information of each individual. DNA provides control of cell activity, if damaged, they can no longer function normally.
Drill pipe (see the French definition )
A drill pipe is 9 meters long. The first pipe is attached to a drilling tool called the trepan or drill bit. As the drilling goes deeper underground, another 9 meter pipe is screwed onto the first pipe, and so on.
Drill string (pipe string) (see the French definition )
The umbrella term for all of the pipes and the trepan used during drilling.
Drilling (see the French definition )
Drilling is the process of making a hole in the ground using a special machine. The aim is to extract and recover a raw material (e.g. oil) from below the ground in order to produce energy. Vertical drilling is most commonly used but directional or slant drilling can also be performed.
