Who is producing, who is consuming?

Coal- The Leading Energy Source
09/08/2010
Coal accounts for 39% of the energy produced worldwide and as such is the leading source of electricity in the world. Although coal production is falling in some European countries, it is expanding rapidly in Asia. The trend for coal consumption is similar and the United States still has the largest reserves.
Production- Boom in Emerging Countries

Global coal production rose an average of 15% between 2005 and 2008. Of the large producers, the most significant increases have been in emerging countries. China, already the leading coal producer, has consolidated its position.
Generalized Increase in Consumption

The largest coal-producing countries are also the largest consumers.
Coal has enabled large emerging countries to meet rising energy demands. Over the medium term, its use could be limited by its carbon emissions.
The United States- The World's Coal Reserve

Coal reserves are well distributed among consumer countries. Local production facilities can more easily meet local demand than in other areas. 85% of coal is consumed in the country in which it is produced.
